Why All The SuperHeroes?

It's not often that I hear something said at an improv show that sounds SO right SO "on the money" that it sticks with me the next day, but this was one of those times. Just look at the nugget that Rachel threw in the middle of an average "Wing Night" scene...

Kat and Matt are looking at the newspaper for movie times. They're dropping movie names that are variations on "Warrior of Commerce", a movie title mentioned in a previous scene. Rachel is onstage with them, reading a newspaper to herself, slight out of the scene.

Matt: "Well, we could see "Warriors Of Commerce" or "Adventures in Commerce" or we could see "Commerce Goes West"..."
Kat: "Hm, I don't know."

Rachel: (Out of Nowhere) "You know they say that it's because the economy is so bad and politically the country is in the dumps, that's why there's so many superhero movies."

And BOOM, she goes right back to reading her newspaper.

I think that she might be onto something.
I think that she has either clued into an insight into the studio's clear motivation to make these superhero movies right now.
I think that she has also clued into why people are so overwhelmingly ready to go see these types of popcorn films.

They need an escape from the $5 a gallon gas and the $3 loafs of bread and the shitty employment situation and the endless war in Iraq and the overall sense of diminishing returns that the middle class is having crammed down their throats.

Maybe we should be seeing fewer superhero movies and spend more time campaigning for change and focusing on the real-world, non-cinematic problems that we're ACTUALLY facing...

Because, seriously, fuck this fictional, flag-waving fuck.

He can't do anything for me, even if he wanted to, because he's not fucking real.

I am, of course, conflicted about the actual application of this new awareness and my deep, geekboy desire to see both Hellboy 2 and Dark Knight 2, over the next two weeks. Ah, the eternal struggle.

These movies have been in the planning stages for years. I can see these movies until I'm blue in the face and I still won't forget how many people have died in the war. I won't forget that we have a douche bag moron in office because of a flawed system. Nope, movies won't distract me at all.

As a self proclaimed geek, I think I'm smart enough to go see some fun movies and still make intelligent decisions about my politics.


As much as I hate to say it....At a time when our economy is so bad, it probably does it some good to get out of the house and spend a little money.

I think you skipping out on a movie you really want to see wont make a difference at all to our current political problems.

I don't have a good answer for all the B.S. going on but I think you should still go see superhero movies.

I may be biased though....
